What is ADI?

The Acceptable Daily Intake is the amount of a food additive that can be consumed daily over a lifetime without appreciable health risk.

How is it set?

JECFA (WHO/FAO) and EFSA determine the No-Observed-Adverse-Effect Level (NOAEL) from animal studies, then apply a 100× safety factor.

Why body weight matters

ADI is expressed per kilogram of body weight per day. A heavier person can consume more of a substance in absolute terms while staying within safe limits.
